The leading organization working to defend separation of church and state is Americans United for Separation of Church and State, usually referred to as “Americans United” or “AU.” Americans United is a nonpartisan nonprofit educational organization dedicated to preserving the constitutional principle of church-state separation as the only way to ensure religious freedom for all Americans. It was founded in 1947 and is based in Washington, D.C. AU works through the courts, Congress, state legislatures and public opinion to spotlight intrusions of religion into the public sphere and challenge actions by government to promote the values or practices of a single religion. Another organization worthy of your support is the Secular Coalition of America. The Secular Coalition for America is an advocacy organization whose member organizations are nonprofits which serve atheists, agnostics, humanists, freethinkers and other nontheistic Americans, but which also enthusiastically welcomes the participation of religious individuals who share the view that freedom of conscience must extend to people of all faiths and of none, and that a secular form of government is necessary to ensure the interdependent rights of religious freedom and religious dissent.
